Summer is upon us and soon clients and photographers will be swooning over the warm sand and ocean breezes. Find a coast line nearly any point during the summer and you are bound to find photography sessions with the waves and sunset in the background. Being in Maine and prior Coast Guard, a large portion of my heart swells when I see open water. It is picturesque of Maine and by far one of my favorite places to photograph. Below you will find a few ideas for Dad, Mom, and children to wear for any style session you have on the beach this summer.
For Dad I suggest a rich blue to emulate his masculinity and a deepness that coincides with the deep blue Maine water. Dad’s outfit will stand out a touch in comparison to the rest of the family and yet blend with the beach as a whole. By adding a few extra touches with the watch and sunglasses, Dad can feel comfortable and stylish. Neutral shorts and flip flops help to emphasize the deep blue shirt. We want to be drawn to Dad’s face. Keep the sleeves rolled up for a more relaxed and natural wear.
Mom’s going natural today with a pop of red! Keeping Mom’s outfit to a simple elegance is perfect. The less pieces for a busy mom on the go, the better. These sandals will not only be a breeze to walk in but also create a dynamic pop for pictures of just Mom and Dad together. With Mom’s foot popped up in a sweet embrace from Dad, it will be as natural as the tides. Simple pearl earrings create interest if Mom wants to wear her hair up. One statement piece of jewelry such as thing bangle, will prove stylish and sophisticated as she places her hand on Dad’s chest.
For young boys I recommend sticking with neutral colors. While a white collard shirt always photographs well, we know boys are always on the move. In my photo sessions I like for children to be running around and free to have fun. If you can already see a white collard shirt is not going to happen for your little man, I suggest a simple t-shirt with no writing. Grey tends to lend itself well for the color balance. I love putting little guys in brightly colored, slim jeans. Yellow would be perfect for this session. It says fun and wild, as most boys are! A picture of this little boy next to Dad or in his arms and you’ll get a dynamic photo for sure! Place him next to Mom and you can still get a gentleness from the photo due to all the neutrals.
While I highly recommend everyone wear solid colored clothing, if there is one place I will say to have a print it is on a little girl’s dress. Sweet girl gets to match Mom and wear a dress. Find a simple costume set of pearls and she will be so happy at the chance to play dress up! The sandals here have rope that accent the beach scene well. She and her brother will match with the yellows and yet still be neutral enough to not have everyone competing in family photos.
All these outfits are great on their own. The outfits are composed in such a way so that when taking individual portraits on the beach during the family session, no one gets lost in the open space. A contrast of color and strategic placement of dominant colors during posing and play, will create a fun and playful vibe. Stay away from clothing that has words or patterns on them, as these tend to inhibit the flow of the story. I am to capture the story and the memories. We do not want the clothing to be competing with the story. Solids and neutrals are the base to any photo shoot. When planning what to wear, always start first with what feels natural to wear, and then look for it in natural hues. Use single statement pieces on each person or only a few couple people to draw the eye.
